How Important is a Front Hall Closet When Selling a Home?
March 18, 2015Not having a front hall closet might be a deal breaker for some buyers, after all, having a spot to put your stuff on when you walk to the door is pretty important. Although some buyers are more creative and might be able to figure out a solution on their own, others need more help. Here are some ways to create a space for coats and shoes in the absence of a front hall closet.
1. Coat trees. If your entry is small and narrow, a coat tree is perfect for hanging seasonal jackets. Very inexpensive, and they come in different finishes and styles that can match the style of your home.
1. BoConcept 2. West Elm 3. Arper 4. Ikea 5. Structube
2. A Coat Rack and a Bench. This combo is great for hanging coats and organizing small items. It has hooks for coats and a bench with baskets at the bottom for your day-to-day stuff. This is a perfect option if you have a little more space. It will provide a storage space for shoes and a spot to sit to put them on.
3. Armoires. If the space permits, armoires can double as a hall closet. Pick the right size and style to fit your space. Craig’s List and Kijiji offer an array of used and beautiful armoires if you are working on a budget. With a little creativity, it can look like a million bucks!

4. Built-ins. If your front hall is large enough, and if your budget permits, you could hire a contractor to build a custom closet-like storage unit with doors. Done right, it can look like it’s been there forever, but it would also be the most expensive option. However, if you’re going to stay put for a while before selling your home, it’s definitely worth looking into.
There are many ways to compensate for the lack of storage space. When selling your home, the closet itself isn’t as essential as having whatever is on display neatly organized and contained. Get organized and cut the clutter by just having the items that are being used on a daily basis. Keep your winter and other seasonal coats and shoes elsewhere.
