6 Ways to Add Color to a Room (Without Painting the Walls)

August 23, 2014

Painting the whole room isn’t the only way to introduce color. There are other ways to add a subtle touch of color that can make your home more visually appealing and more attractive for your buyers when it is time to sell.

6 EASY ways to add a splash of color to any room

1.  Artworks

An artwork placed on top of a fireplace, above your sofa, or hung on a feature wall can do the trick.  Here’s my tip, when hanging art over the fireplace, it’s a good idea to pick an artwork about the same size as the fireplace opening. If it is going to be hung over a piece of furniture (a sofa for example), it should not be wider than the width of the furniture. As a general rule, art should be about 75% the width of the furniture. Then use it as your reference point in choosing your color scheme throughout the house for a cohesive look!

2. Pillows and Throws

Practical and stylish pillows and throw blankets are two of my favorite home items. They can jazz up a plain beige couch.  Here’s my tip, pick a few colors from your art and then find various prints and patterns that reflect the same tones and palette.

3. Furniture pieces

The options for fabric furniture pieces are unlimited. There are many ways to go about this, from finding the right piece at a furniture store, to getting an old piece of furniture and painting it. If you’re brave enough, use color on big furniture pieces like your sofa!  If you cannot commit to big pieces, bring color through smaller furniture pieces like accent chairs, occasional tables, or ottomans. Here’s my tip, consider adding accent pieces to bring in prints, patterns, and texture that complements your color scheme, it will add depth to the room, and it will make the room looks finished!

4. Rugs

Do not forget your floor! Using the right rug, with the right color, can tie everything up. A colorful rug strategically placed in front of a chair or under a coffee table can add color and texture to a living room. It can be put on top of hardwood flooring or carpet. You can choose a contrast color, chosen from fabric you’re using in the room, or look for one with an interesting pattern that ties into the theme of your room. Here’s my tip, when it comes to the size of the rug, the bigger, the better. Nothing shrinks a room faster than a “postage stamp” at the seating area. The best rule of thumb: Keep 12″ of wood around the perimeter.

5. Accessories

Bright vases, eye-catching decorative pieces, and colorful lamps can breathe color to any room. Use coordinating picture frames or wall art to accentuate your color scheme, as well as candles, colored lampshades, and vases. Here’s my tip, displaying collections or any decorative pieces small or large, calls for ruthless editing. Always ask yourself, “Do I love it, does it enhance my life, and can I live without it?” Restraint calms the eye and gives everything a sense of purpose.

6. Flowers

If you don’t want to go overboard, a vase of flowers is a great solution!  If you want just a touch of color, consider a simple flower arrangement to the room.  You can never go wrong with flowers, almost any bright, cheerful, and beautiful blooms of the season can help liven up the room and bring a feel of home to any space.
